Things started getting better and I thought it would be a good idea to try to get my FICO score back up so I can start earning rewards from my purchases and eventually get a loan for an investment property. I followed a very simple approach to rebuilding my credit that should work for everyone and I'm going to share it with you for free.

My credit scores started out as "Good" but below average and when I was done my credit score is in the "Very Good" bordering on "Exceptional" range.

There is no quick fix but rebuilding your credit score is a a very simple process. You just have to show you can use credit responsibly over a long period of time. If you don't know how to use credit responsibly I'll show you how. I'll go into more details but basically you follow these steps to build your credit and earn rewards.

Get a Discover IT Secured Credit Card

Use the credit card for one of your regular budget items every month

5 days before the statement end date pay off some of the balance leaving no more than 30% of your available credit, preferably less.

When you receive the statement, pay off the previous balance in full to avoid interest.

After 12 months and your Discover IT Secured Card converts to a non-secured credit card, apply for another rewards card to earn more rewards.

If you follow these steps your credit should improve overall. Some months it may go down but at the end of the first year it should be much higher than when you started.
Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1004328680287265157.post-74428197474498849742021-06-26T10:00:00.013-04:002021-06-26T10:29:35.219-04:00Hooks Creek, Cheesequake State Park Print For Sale

Wall art photographic print for sale, "Hooks Creek, Cheesequake State Park, NJ 9/2019".

There was a time in my life where I thought I could be some sort of fine art photographer. I even got to the point where I was getting ready for a showing at a small local gallery. Unfortunately my life wound up getting turned upside down for a few years and I spent a long time not being a photographer. It was a pretty dark time in my life, thankfully one I've been moving past.

The subjects back then were very different than the photos I'm posting on this blog and Instagram. Spending time in nature became an important part of getting past that period of my life. I thought I might try and share physical copies of some of things I saw along the way. This is the first print I'm making available. It's been decades since I've made an art print sale.
Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1004328680287265157.post-85151631926220106632021-03-29T06:30:00.005-04:002021-06-29T23:38:03.928-04:00How To Reset Circadian Rhythm Naturally

Most of my life I have had sleep issues including insomnia, abnormal circadian rhythm and even sleep apnea. Nothing I did seemed to help, even having surgery. While
I'm going to recommend some products that helped, the biggest change was to my
diet. Relax, it's not some hipster superfood either, it's advice I got from
scientific research and eating things you probably already have at home.

Two things I've been able to accomplish with my health and wellbeing is being
able to lose weight and being able to reset my circadian rhythm. I've wound up
talking to people about it a few times so I thought I'd share it online in
case it helps anyone else. I'm not a medical professional, this is just what worked for me.

A couple of years ago I met an amazing woman who would wake up very early. I
was never much of a morning person. Every morning I would get texts from her
at 5am, 4am sometimes even as early 3am. While things were early in the relationship
I didn't want to blow it by waiting too long to respond so I tried to do
research on sleep problems. This wasn't the first time but I stumbled upon a
paper that must of had the right info. I'm still waking up early, we're
still together nearly 2 years later.

Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1004328680287265157.post-28870149069869463702021-02-17T09:00:00.001-05:002021-02-17T09:00:03.641-05:0010 Minute Vegan Burger and Fries Recipe

One of my quick lunches or dinners is a Vegan Burger and Fries which I can cook in only 10 minutes using an Air Fryer.

10 minutes for a burger and fries is faster than I can run to the closest drive-order, order, pickup and scarf down on the drive back. My vegan version actually has more protein with fewer carbs and fat as well as overall calories. I do make less fries and substitute a small salad or steamed vegetables to help fill me up.

I usually make this with frozen Aldi's Empower Burger which uses pea protein and is similar to Beyond Burgers and Impossible Burgers though not exactly the same. One nice thing about the Earth Grown Empower Burger is that it has more protein than the other 2 name brands.

Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1004328680287265157.post-50590318353386236822020-03-24T18:35:00.001-04:002020-04-01T14:02:39.585-04:00All Aldi Whole Bean Coffee Reviewed

I was very impressed with my first taste of Aldi Organic Peru Whole Bean Coffee where I compared it to some freshly roasted beans from a local coffee shop that cost more than twice as much. That led me to want to try all of Aldi's whole bean coffees to see how they compared since they're so affordably priced. This included everything from standard coffee to organic coffees from places like Peru, Ethiopia and Tanzania. All of them cost less than $6 each when I bought them.

Not all the stores in my area stock all the coffees and sometimes the more specialty beans aren't in stock every week but there's always something and all of them are good choices at a great price.
This is a video review for Aldi's Simply Nature Peru coffee. It's Organic, Fair Trade Certified, single origin. It's a medium roast coffee with a great flavor and at a great price.
To help judge the coffee I brewed up some more expensive coffee from a small local chain roaster which I enjoy very much. I used Aldi's Ambiano Single Serve Coffee Maker to brew both cups.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1004328680287265157.post-10683606644232088512019-08-06T15:31:00.003-04:002019-08-06T15:31:43.803-04:00Using my Android Apps to lose 2lbs a Week

2017 was a stressful time and not great for my fitness goals so in 2018 I found myself needing to lose a decent amount of weight again. 🙁 I'm a few lbs away from my goal and thought others might be interested in knowing how I'm doing it and what free apps I use to help.

In the beginning of 2018 I just focussed on exercising more and trying to be more careful of what I ate. More vegetables and fruits, less fried foods, cut out eating out almost entirely, no more making cheesecake or ice cream (which really hurt,) etc. Exercise became more frequent as well. I started making time to hike regularly again.

The weight was coming off but it was slow. Then in October 2018 I set a goal to lose 2 lbs a week. That's pretty tough but there are a few apps and other tools I use to help me stay on track and monitor my progress so I can lose the weight faster.
That's a section of the park I haven't explored very much of but I finally had the opportunity to look for the falls while doing the Clinton Point Hike.

I'm in the park frequently but normally on shorter hikes that are closer to home. When I went to do Carpenter's Loop II a few days ago, Ross Dock was closed and there was a sign from Englewood Cliffs indicating the trail was closed. I looked at the map and realized I didn't have time to do the northern hike and I'd probably want at least a snack for that duration. It's about twice as long as Carpenter's II. I was able to get through Carpenter's but the next day I decided to finally tackle Clinton Point.

It was an incredible hike and Greenbrook Falls were pretty impressive.

Why Camp in an X3

The majority of my hiking is done at a local park. It has great views and some challenging parts and has a fairly extensive trail system and I can walk to it but it's nice to explore other trails in the New Jersey which is one of the reasons I like to go camping.

My normal car camping set up is pretty involved. I have a pop up canopy, large tent that can comfortably fit a queen sized air mattress with plenty of room to move around, hammock and extensive cooking gear plus other odds and ends. In addition I bring a lot of food for a 2 or 3 night trip. That all takes a lot of time to get out of storage, setup, pack up, clean out then store. I usually don't have all my gear back in storage for up to 3 days after a trip as I slowly take care of it here and there.

If I'm in the mood to change up my hiking trails or just need a break to be closer to nature, do a quick overnight trip to hit some new trails early in the morning, I wanted a quicker way to camp. If I'm camping by myself just for a night or two then I can significantly reduce what I bring.
A healthy recipe to make skillet eggs with hash browns and spinach.

I've adapted this recipe from a few similar recipes I make. My main goal was to reduce fat and increase potassium intake. I wound up getting rid of the cheese that I would normally include as part of this easy breakfast recipe. Spinach was added for it's potassium among other things.
Review of the Evanston Screened 6 tent from Eureka is a roomy 6 person dome tent with a 5'8" center height that includes a screened in front room.

I've been camping more recently and wanted to upgrade from my old 4 person tent to something a bit roomier and more comfortable to stand in. After looking at many different tents on the market I decided to go with the Eureka Evanston Screened 6 Tent and I've been very happy with that decision.
The Woods of Wenonah Trail System consists of a number of different trails that total just under 6 miles in Wenonah, NJ that are maintained by the Wenonah Environmental Commission.

Trails are fairly easy to travel on but some get muddy or swampy though there are planks in most of these areas.

Along the trails you can see Wenonah Lake, Comey's Lake, Dilk's Pond, Monongahela Brook, Mantua Creek and a Tea House.

There are small loops of 1 mile or less around certain areas such as the lakes and Monongahela Brook but the longer trails of Break Back Run Trail, Mantua Creek Trail and Glen Trail are straight through trails. By combining a few of the trails, in addition to some street walking, I was able to make a nice loop that began and ended at the parking lot for Wenonah Lake.
Tillman Ravine Trail is a nice, fairly easy 1.8 mile, mainly out and back trail in the Tillman Ravine Natural Area within Stokes State forest in Walpack Township, NJ.

You'll be hiking through a ravine carved by Tillman Brook. Along the way you'll see some small waterfalls and cross some small bridges. The trail splits early on between an upper and lower route. I took the lower but I should have taken the upper on the way out and the lower on the way back.
India Brook Park in Mendham, NJ contains a number of hiking trails that loop around the park allowing you to decide if you want to take a short or longer hike.

The main feature of the park is Buttermilk Falls, small waterfall along the India Brook. It empties into a small pool area that I saw described as as swimming hole. It didn't look deep enough to actually swim in but it did look like you could maybe sit in it and cool off.

The trails are fairly easy. Not many hills or difficult passes. The views of the brook and the falls are beautiful and the trails in general are well maintained. It can get a bit muddy after rains. I found the trail system confusing and not well marked. Two trails both had yellow blazes and I did get off my intended path and have to find my way back on it at one point.
Here's my recipe for pretzel bagels. They're a mix between bagels and pretzels. They have that nice pretzel crust taste along with the soft chewy bagel inside. These were great for sandwiches.

I had always wanted to make bagels. A couple of weeks earlier I wound up making pretzels with my girlfriend's daughter who got the cooking bug. I realized the recipes and methods were fairly similar so I improvised this version so I could get the best of both worlds.

Baking isn't my strong point. This was the first time I tried to make something new without seeing if there were any recipes online. I'm quite happy with how they came out.
I started camping again recently and I wanted to know if I could use charcoal instead of firewood to cook with in the park provided fire rings in my state parks. The short answer is in my home state of NJ it's permissible to use charcoal instead of firewood in the fire rings provided there are no other restrictions on fires in general. For your own location you might want to confirm with your park rangers. The rest of this article will go over why and how to use charcoal in a fire ring instead of firewood.
These low fat, low cost, honey-nut, Greek Yogurt cups are a great, high protein snack. These are made with homemade yogurt.

I go through a lot of Greek yogurt every week and it's not cheap to buy as much as I eat so I wind up making my own which brings the cost of these cups down to $0.50 each. If you buy plain, non-fat Greek Yogurt instead the price almost doubles. For me that amounts to a savings of almost $300 a year for all my yogurt needs. I'll included a quick guide to making your own Greek yogurt at the end of this recipe. It's really not that hard and you probably have all the tools you'll need to make it yourself.
Now on to the Greek yogurt snack cups.
A protein packed, low-fat, fiber-rich and flavorful overnight oats recipe that helps me start off the day on the right foot. This is a complete breakfast for me.

There is a little bit of costs to get you started if you don't have food storage containers to prep in advance but overall it costs me about $2.21 per serving. The initial cost seems high because some of the ingredients are expensive but they will make more than one 8 serving batch. A 42 oz container of oats and bag of flax seed will make almost 4 batches . A 6oz bag of nuts will make 3 batches. The protein powder if only used for the oats will make over 5 batches. Every time you make a batch though you'll want to get milk, frozen berries and Greek yogurt.
This really worked for me.

I finally quit smoking again. I was contemplating my options from getting a prescription for Chantix, nicotine replacement gum or patches, acupuncture, hypnosis, etc. All of those aren't cheap and while things have gotten better for me financially, I still have a lot of recovery to do in that department. So a few weeks ago I decided to check out the Google Play app store to see what might be available to help me quit for a lot less. The first app I chose (this time) did the trick. It was free and contained no ads either.
It's helped save me a lot of money and time by being able to go without a car for a long time or otherwise allowing me to save on gas and driving. I can get items delivered in 2 days, sometimes less with free shipping. Some of these items are not available or hard to find locally and they're usually at great prices. In addition I get access to other features such as a large selection of free streaming videos and music.

A new features of Amazon Prime is the new Prime Pantry. A service that allows you to order typically pantry items such as canned, jarred, dry and other packaged foods, snacks as well as a variety of cleaning and household items. You add items to your cart until you fill one or more boxes and you only pay about $5.99 for shipping. Shipping has only taken about 3 days for me the two times I've used the service. Since this is fairly new service I wanted to share my review.
Did you know you can go Kayaking in Manhattan? I didn't up until a few years ago when a friend told me about it. Best of all you can do it for free! It's a great way to get some upper and lower body exercise and enjoy the city in a way you probably haven't done before.

There are three different free kayaking locations you can from depending on how far you'd like to ride.

The ride starts in Fort Lee where you'll head across into Manhattan via the George Washington Bridge, follow the Manhattan Greenway along the Hudson River until you arrive at one of the three paddling destinations.
One of the big problems I had when I first started getting into cycling again a few years ago is that I couldn't ride for more than about 25 minutes. My legs weren't too tired to ride, my butt just couldn't handle being on the bike anymore and it was too uncomfortable to ride again the next day. After getting a more comfortable saddle and a good pair of bike shorts I was able to ride all day long! I've tried a few different affordable saddles under $50 and wanted to share my opinions and some tips.
I recently purchased the new rugged Kyocera Brigadier available from Verizon Wireless is a thoroughly kick-ass phone. It's a great phone for guys (and gals) who have to use their phone in extreme environments. It is built tough to military specs with a Sapphire front glass, is certified for use in hazardous (explosive) environments, can be used with gloves and can be submerged in up to 6 feet of water for 30 minutes. While it doesn't sport the fastest processor on the market, the 1.4Ghz Quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon is nothing to sneeze at. Enterprise features, good quality cameras (front and rear), bright and clear display round out the features. If you mostly use your phone to check TMZ and post selfies to Instagram while you walk around the mall sipping your kale and acacia smoothie, maybe this isn't the phone for you. If you work hard and play hard and want a phone you can depend on. This is it. You can order the Kyocera Brigadier from Verizon online at Amazon.
Little rectangular (sometimes triangular) shapes that are either painted or attached to trees or rocks that mark the path. If you've done any hiking you've run across them. Some are single rectangles but sometimes they are in groups of two or three. Here's what the different trail blaze patterns mean.

Common Trail Blaze Meanings

Look for these markings every 2-300 yards to help keep you on track. They can be in different colors, with a different color marking a separate trail in the park system. Sometimes two colors are used, usually white and another color, if the park has a lot of distinct trails to mark.

Pretty simple. One blaze = straight, two blazes = turn left or right depending on which blaze is higher, 3 blazes all the same color means the start or end of a trail. An easy way to remember start and end is to think of the three blazes like an arrow pointing to the trail. If it's pointing towards you, you're at the end, away you're at the start. If you see 3 blazes but 2 are one color and another is a different color, that indicates you're at an intersection with another trail. The color with 2 blazes will be the trail you're on while the single color will be the new trail.

Here are some examples of common trail blazes. Can you find and identify them?
