How To Take Your First Car Camping Trip: A Beginner's Guide

How To Take Your First Car Camping Trip: A Beginner's Guide
Beginner car camping setup with tent, campfire, and cooking gear
A simple beginner-friendly car camping setup with tent, campfire cooking, and essential gear.

Camping is a strange hobby. You spend the weekend sleeping on the ground, dealing with bugs, maybe getting rained on, and living without some of the basic conveniences you take for granted at home. Sometimes the tent leaks a little, sometimes the coffee takes longer to make than it should, and sometimes you wake up wondering why you chose to sleep on a pile of dirt instead of your bed. Yet somehow people keep coming back to it.

For me, camping is not really about camping. It is about waking up already inside the park. Most of the places I love hiking and swimming are at least a couple hours away, and turning those trips into day hikes means spending half the day on highways. When I camp instead, I wake up surrounded by forests, lakes, and trails. That means less time gritting my teeth and more time grinding coffee.

Most of the places I love hiking and swimming are at least a couple hours away from home. If I tried to do them as day trips, half the day would disappear sitting on highways. Camping solves that problem. Instead of driving back and forth, I can wake up already surrounded by forests, lakes, and trails.

Some of my favorite trips have been to places like the Delaware Water Gap, Stokes State Forest, High Point, Cheesequake, Allaire, and Wharton State Forest. Across the river in New York there are great parks too like Taconic and Beaver Pond. Each park has its own personality — different trails, different lakes, and different scenery.

One of my favorite early hikes was the Tillman Ravine Trail in Stokes State Forest. It is the kind of place that reminds you how beautiful these parks really are.

Camping lets me experience those places in a much more relaxed way.

Fix Your Credit the Simple Way: Secured Card, Low Utilization, Pay in Full

Fix Your Credit the Simple Way: Secured Card, Low Utilization, Pay in Full
Discover secured card concept image

If your credit score dropped and you are not sure how to fix it, this is the exact system I used to rebuild mine from “Good” to nearly “Exceptional.”

No tricks. No shady tactics. No credit repair companies. Just one secured card, controlled utilization, and strict automation.

Within 12 months, my score improved significantly. Not because I gamed the system. Because I showed consistent, boring, responsible credit behavior.

This is not a quick fix.
It is a repeatable process.
And if you follow it exactly, it works.

The key is not just “use a secured card.” The key is how you use it.

Healthy 10-Minute Vegan Burger + Air Fryer Fries (Fast Lunch or Dinner)

Healthy 10-Minute Vegan Burger + Air Fryer Fries (Fast Lunch or Dinner)
Vegan burger and fries cooked in an air fryer in 10 minutes

When the burger and fries craving hits but you're watching your calories, this 10-minute plant-based version hits the spot without the drive-through guilt. Everything cooks in one air fryer basket and comes together faster than takeout.

Let's be clear: this is still a burger and fries. Plant-based doesn't magically turn it into a salad. But compared to a beef burger meal, you're looking at fewer calories, less saturated fat, and zero cholesterol — which the American Heart Association notes as potential benefits of plant-based proteins. Plus you get more fiber and about the same amount of protein.

All Aldi Whole Bean Coffee Reviewed

All Aldi Whole Bean Coffee Reviewed
I was very impressed with my first taste of Aldi Organic Peru Whole Bean Coffee where I compared it to some freshly roasted beans from a local coffee shop that cost more than twice as much. That led me to want to try all of Aldi's whole bean coffees to see how they compared since they're so affordably priced. This included everything from standard coffee to organic coffees from places like Peru, Ethiopia and Tanzania. All of them cost less than $6 each when I bought them.

Not all the stores in my area stock all the coffees and sometimes the more specialty beans aren't in stock every week but there's always something and all of them are good choices at a great price.

Aldi Simply Nature Organic Peru Whole Bean Coffee Review (Honest Side by Side Test)

Aldi Simply Nature Organic Peru Whole Bean Coffee Review (Honest Side by Side Test)

Aldi has been quietly adding more whole bean coffees, and I finally grabbed the one that checks every buzzword box: Organic, Fair Trade, single origin, medium roast, 100% Arabica, and somehow still under five bucks for a 12 oz bag.

I am not the kind of person who can taste “stone fruit” and “rainforest moss.” I can tell the difference between roasts, I know what I like, and I know when a coffee tastes burnt. That is the entire resume.

So I did a simple side by side: this Aldi Simply Nature Organic Peru whole bean coffee against a much more expensive bag from Bean & Bean, a local roaster I genuinely like.

The surprise was not that the expensive coffee won. The surprise was how close the Aldi coffee got.

Camping in a BMW X3 SUV

Camping in a BMW X3 SUV
Camping setup in the back of a BMW X3 at a campsite
My quick overnight BMW X3 camping setup.

There's enough room to sleep in a BMW X3 if it's just you, and maybe enough for a very close couple if neither of you minds being tight on space. I tested this setup by myself, and at a little over 6 feet tall I was able to fit by moving the front passenger seat all the way forward, folding both rear seats down, and sleeping on the passenger side.

What surprised me is that space wasn't really the biggest problem. The bigger issues were heat, bugs, and how the mattress handled the transition where the flat cargo area runs out. My cheap Intex mattress was actually fine, and the rear headrests helped support the head end more than I expected once I extended them, but I still stuffed clothes underneath that area to give it some extra support.

So yes, sleeping in a BMW X3 can work. It's not just about finding a mattress that fits. You've also got to figure out how to stay comfortable once the flat cargo floor runs out, how to keep cool on a hot night, and how to get airflow without letting the bugs in.

Eureka Evanston Screened 6 Tent Review: Roomy Car Camping Tent With a Screened Porch

Eureka Evanston Screened 6 Tent Review: Roomy Car Camping Tent With a Screened Porch

If you want a roomy car-camping tent that feels like a real upgrade from a cramped 4-person dome, the Eureka Evanston Screened 6 is a solid choice. I’ve used it on multiple trips (including heavy rain) and it’s earned a permanent spot in my camping gear.

This is a hands-on review of the Evanston Screened 6: what it’s great at, what’s annoying, who it fits best, and which accessories are actually worth buying. I’m a little over 6' tall, and my biggest motivation was simple: I wanted more room to move around and a setup that didn’t feel like a nightly yoga class just to change my pants.

Can You Use Charcoal in a Campground Fire Ring? (Pros, Cons, and How to Do It)

Can You Use Charcoal in a Campground Fire Ring? (Pros, Cons, and How to Do It)
charcoal cooking in a campground fire ring
Charcoal burning in a campground fire ring for cooking.

If you spend much time camping in state parks, you have probably wondered whether you can cook with charcoal in the park fire rings instead of firewood. I had the same question on a recent trip.

The short answer, at least in my home state of New Jersey, is yes. Charcoal is generally allowed in park fire rings as long as there are no broader fire restrictions in place. Still, every park is different, so it is always smart to confirm with the rangers before you light anything.

But the real question isn't just whether you can use charcoal.

The real question is why you might want to.

Homemade Honey Nut Greek Yogurt Cups (High Protein Snack, 50 Cents Each)

Homemade Honey Nut Greek Yogurt Cups (High Protein Snack, 50 Cents Each)
Homemade honey nut Greek yogurt snack cups with walnuts, almonds, and a honey drizzle in small containers
12 grams of protein, 127 calories, and about 50 cents. Not bad for something that takes 2 minutes to assemble.

Greek yogurt is one of the better high-protein snacks you can keep on hand, but buying it prepackaged adds up quickly. Making your own and portioning it into snack cups brings the cost down to about 50 cents each. That works out to close to $300 a year in savings for me, which is a meaningful number for something I eat almost every day.

The cups themselves take about 15 minutes to prep if you are making a batch of 8 at once, which is what I usually do. They sit in the fridge all week and are ready to grab whenever you need something quick and filling. If you are not making your own yogurt yet, I walk through my process at the end of this post. It is simpler than it sounds.

Overnight Protein and Berry Oats Recipe (37g Protein, Easy Meal Prep Breakfast)

Overnight Protein and Berry Oats Recipe (37g Protein, Easy Meal Prep Breakfast)
Overnight protein and berry oats in a sealed container ready to grab from the fridge in the morning
Eight of these take about 20 minutes to prep and then the rest of the week sorts itself out.

This is the breakfast I actually eat every morning. Not the one I intend to make when I am feeling ambitious on a Sunday, but the one that is actually in the fridge waiting for me. Overnight oats with whey protein, Greek yogurt, flax seed, mixed nuts, and frozen berries. It delivers 37 grams of protein and keeps me full significantly longer than anything that comes in a pouch.

The upfront cost is higher than it looks because some ingredients like protein powder and nuts come in larger packages, but once you have those the per-serving cost comes out to about $2.21. A 42 oz container of oats and a bag of flax seed will cover nearly 4 batches. A bag of nuts covers 3. The protein powder alone will last over 5 batches. The only things you re-buy regularly are milk, frozen berries, and Greek yogurt.

There is also a reason beyond convenience for why this particular breakfast is worth being specific about, and it has nothing to do with the taste.

How I Quit Smoking in 2 Hours (Still Smoke-Free Since 2017)

How I Quit Smoking in 2 Hours (Still Smoke-Free Since 2017)
Broken cigarette representing how I quit smoking in 2 hours and stayed smoke-free
The method that helped me quit smoking in two hours and stay smoke-free for years.

In 2017 I quit smoking in about two hours. As of 2026 I'm still smoke-free.

I had tried quitting before like most smokers. You know you should stop, but the habit has a way of creeping back in.

Eventually I came across something that claimed you could quit smoking in 2 hours.

That sounded ridiculous.

But it worked.

Nearly a decade later I still don't smoke, so I wanted to explain exactly what happened and what I did.

Prime Pantry Review

Prime Pantry Review
I've been an Amazon Prime for a number of years. It's helped save me a lot of money and time by being able to go without a car for a long time or otherwise allowing me to save on gas and driving. I can get items delivered in 2 days, sometimes less with free shipping. Some of these items are not available or hard to find locally and they're usually at great prices. In addition I get access to other features such as a large selection of free streaming videos and music.

A new features of Amazon Prime is the new Prime Pantry. A service that allows you to order typically pantry items such as canned, jarred, dry and other packaged foods, snacks as well as a variety of cleaning and household items. You add items to your cart until you fill one or more boxes and you only pay about $5.99 for shipping. Shipping has only taken about 3 days for me the two times I've used the service. Since this is fairly new service I wanted to share my review.

Bottled Water vs Filtered Tap Water: Real Cost After 333 Weeks

Bottled Water vs Filtered Tap Water: Real Cost After 333 Weeks
Reusable water bottles replacing bottled water for long term savings
Tracking the cost difference between bottled water and filtered tap water.

Back in 2007 I stopped buying bottled water and switched to filtered tap water using a pitcher and reusable insulated bottles.

At first I did it mostly for convenience. I hated running out of bottled water and constantly buying more.

But after 333 weeks without bottled water I got curious about something.

How much money does filtered water actually save compared to bottled water?

Best Way To Wash DriFit/Under Armour Shirts

Best Way To Wash DriFit/Under Armour Shirts
Workout clothes, moisture whicking detergent in sink.
I've tried a lot of different methods for cleaning moisture wicking shirts such as Dri-Fit and UnderArmour technical shirts based on blog and forum recommendations but I found that ProWash Activewear 2X Liquid Detergent is the best choice for me. Here are some tips on how I use ProWash to wash my workout clothes in the washing machine and by hand.

I use pro wash to clean pretty much all my workout clothes. Most of which are made of moisture wicking fabric. I love these shirts, especially in black, because I do a lot of exercising outdoors and these shirts don't show sweat.

ProWash is good on a wide variety of fabrics including moisture wicking fabrics, microfiber, lycra, spandex, fleece, polyester and even natural fabrics such as cotton and wool. ProWash is specially formulated to preserve the moisture wicking qualities of tech shirts like Dri-Fit. It works very well. Some of my shirts are a couple of years old and still wick and look as good as new. ProWash is also great at getting rid of perspiration stains and odors.

How To Remove Scratches From Acrylic Watch Crystal

How To Remove Scratches From Acrylic Watch Crystal
Timex acrylic watch crystal polished to remove scratches
Acrylic crystals are used for lower priced watches. They are cheaper than sapphire and mineral crystals and don't break as easily because they are softer. This softness also makes acrylic scratch easier. Over the years acrylic watch glass can develop scratches but it's cheap and easy to restore the acrylic to an almost new state with a little bit of work.

I stole a watch from my mom. Don't worry, it's not because I'm  a meth-head. Using my watch repair kit was fun so I was looking for other watches that I could fix. I knew she had some old watches that had issues.

I ran across this vintage Timex women's manual wind watch. It has a stainless steel back, chrome finished case and a nice silver dial with arabic numerals and a date window.

How to Buy a Man's Watch: A Gift Guide That Won't End Up in a Drawer

How to Buy a Man's Watch: A Gift Guide That Won't End Up in a Drawer
Classic men's dress watch with silver dial and two tone bracelet, a common gift style
A safe, classic gift style: clean dial, simple case, and a band that works with most outfits.

Shopping for a watch gift can feel weirdly high-stakes. You want it to look great, feel “him,” and not end up living in a drawer next to old chargers and mystery keys.

The good news is you don’t need to know watch jargon to nail this. If you focus on a few simple choices (band, case, dial, and how “busy” the face looks), you can confidently pick something he’ll actually wear.

This guide on how to buy a man's watch is written for anyone buying a gift for a guy: Valentine’s Day, Christmas, birthday, anniversary, or the classic “I saw this and thought of you.”

The trick is to shop his current habits, not your taste.
